India Football: Rising on the Global Stage

Football, widely recognized as the most popular sport globally, has historically faced challenges in gaining a firm foothold in India, where cricket has held dominant status. Nevertheless, a significant transformation is underway as football gathers momentum through the establishment of national leagues and the growth of grassroots programs. 

The emergence of talented players, the strengthening of national teams, and the unwavering support of fans and sponsors have positioned Indian football for a promising future on the global stage

Development of Football in India

Football was introduced to India by British colonialists in the late 19th century, rapidly capturing the interest of the local population. The first recorded match in India took place in Calcutta in 1889, and the sport quickly spread across the nation. By the early 20th century, football had become one of India’s most beloved sports, leading to the formation of numerous clubs and leagues throughout the country.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) was established  In 1937 as the governing body in India. Since then, the AIFF has played a pivotal role in the sport’s development by setting up national leagues, tournaments, and grassroots programs aimed at nurturing young talent.

Football in India has encountered numerous challenges in its quest to compete with the overwhelming popularity and commercial success of cricket. However, there has been notable progress in recent years, although there is still a substantial gap to bridge before football can match cricket in terms of public interest and financial support. 

Best Football Clubs in India

Several football clubs in India have emerged as the country’s best, both in terms of their on-field performances and off-field support. Let’s take a look at a few notable clubs:

Bengaluru FC, founded in 2013, swiftly emerged as a prominent football club and has since established itself as one of India’s premier teams. With an impressive record, the club has clinched two Indian Super League (ISL) titles (2018-19 and 2020-21) along with two I-League titles (2013-14 and 2015-16). Bengaluru FC commands a loyal and passionate fan base and places significant importance on nurturing young Indian talent for India’s national football team matches.

Mumbai City FC: Founded in 2014, Mumbai City FC has rapidly become one of the most successful clubs in the ISL. The team clinched their first ISL title in the 2020-21 season and has finished as runners-up twice. Known for their attacking prowess and ability to attract top foreign players, Mumbai City FC has captured the attention of football enthusiasts across India.

ATK Mohun Bagan: Formed in 2020 through a merger between two historic Indian football clubs, ATK and Mohun Bagan, this Kolkata-based club has made a strong impact in the ISL. ATK Mohun Bagan emerged as champions in the 2020-21 ISL season and finished as runners-up in 2021-22. With a robust defence and passionate fan base, the club is considered a formidable force in Indian football.

Future of Indian Football

Despite the obstacles encountered by Indian football, there are abundant reasons to be optimistic about its future. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has made substantial investments in the development of grassroots programs, aimed at nurturing young talent. As a result, a continuous flow of skilled Indian players has been making remarkable strides both in club competitions and on the international stage. Notable names include Sandesh Jhingan, Akash Mishra, and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who has contributed significantly to India’s national football team players 

The men’s national team has experienced a recent upswing in performance, reaching its highest-ever FIFA ranking of 97 in 2021 (currently at 106). Furthermore, the team qualified for the third round of AFC Asian Cup qualifiers for the first time in 27 years, marking a significant achievement that sets the stage for continued success. India football ranks 19th in Asia of 101st in the world. On the 14th June 2022 India vs Hong Kong football match, the Indian team scored 4 -0  in the AFC Asian Cup.

In an exciting encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.  In their second Group D match of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers’ third round, India vs AFG football match faced off on the football field, resulting in a 2-1 scoreline favouring India.

Notably, growth and development are also evident at the club level. The Indian Super League and I-League have expanded, welcoming new clubs and witnessing existing clubs invest in infrastructure and facilities.
